Number of vacancies up in the private sector

The number of filled vacancies grew in the second quarter of 2010 for the first time in two years (by 18.7 thousand or 2.5%). That was the result of the increase in the number of vacancies in the private sector (by 18.0 thousand), confirming the previously made observation by the Bank of Latvia that it is the private sector that has determined the rise in employment as of April 2010.

The number of filled vacancies grew most (about two thirds of the increase) in the goods sector (industrial production, construction), reflecting the important role of foreign demand (i.e. export) in the economic recovery and promotion of employment. It is a safe assumption that in the next few quarters the number of both unfilled and filled vacancies will continue to grow primarily in the private sector.
