Egils Kaužēns holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Latvia and a Diploma in Applied Economic Research from the Institute for Advanced Studies in Vienna. He began his career at Latvijas Banka in 1992 as an economist in the Monetary Policy Department, and later was promoted to the positions of senior economist and chief economist.

Egils Kaužēns is responsible for analysing the use of Latvijas Banka's monetary policy instruments, issues of the Latvian securities market, and liquidity conditions.
